The rut has started. The elk in northern Arkansas have begun their annual mating rituals. This nice 6x6 herd bull has been bugling for two weeks and really putting on a show. At least until last weekend, when he evidently was wounded in a battle to keep his herd. Reports were of a young 9x9 bull attempting to remove this guy from his harem and the strong possibility of a fight. Judging from the severe limp and favoring of his right front leg, this report could very well be true. It's pretty amazing that he maintained his herd. He was having difficulty keeping the cows herded together and spent a lot of his time lying to reduce the pain on that leg. With the extent of immobility, chasing off satellite bulls seemed to be impossible, although there weren't any contenders while I was watching him as the sun set on Saturday evening. He's a tough guy that has earned the right to pass along his genes.
