This solid 6x6 bull elk fell from the ranks of Herd Bull, but is staying close and working to get his status back. He maintained the herd for 2-3 weeks and I suspect that he lost due to exhaustion from the constant attention required of being a herd bull. One morning he had a very noticeable limp, then as I got a closer look, he had a broken tine on his right side. Both indications he had lost a battle during the night. He's a firm contender and becoming more so as the current herd bull tires from maintaining the herd. When I snapped this photo he was moving close to the herd and obviously would like to take back the harem, but has yet to have any luck in doing so.
