The male American Goldfinch in breeding colors is like a flying jewel! They are one of, if not the brightest colored bird we have. It is also migratory, ranging from mid-Canada to North Carolina during breeding season and from the northern US to Mexico during winter. The only finch in its subfamily that undergoes a complete molt; the male is vibrant yellow in the summer and olive colored in winter. Females are a dull yellow-brown that brightens only slightly during summer. This particular male was photographed in my yard on top of the mountain overlooking Ponca on July 7.
