The Elk Rut 2016

The rut has started! There aren't a lot of elk in the valley, but I suspect that will change as the rut intensifies. I have found two separate herds and have seen four mature bulls. Both herds are mid-valley between the BRT trailhead and Ponca. The herd nearest Ponca is the harem of this pictured bull. The other herd bull is a bigger 6x6 that is more typical than this one. Lots of bugling from both, but the best action has been the herd closest to Ponca. You can find them about a mile south of the elk viewing pull-off and where the highway is on a high bank above the field. A perfect place to view from, but dangerous due to traffic. PLEASE remember to pull completely off the highway to allow normal traffic to flow!
